Let's go touring…

French Alps self guided motorcycle holiday

French Alps self-guided motorcycle-tour. Breathtaking mountain views and the iconic Alpine passes.

The French Alps self-guided motorcycle-tour is indulgent on every level. Three main ingredients make this journey very special. First, it is France. Second, it is the Alps. And third, it is motorcycling. It is a single-centre tour that includes circular day rides around some of the best local mountain passes of France and Italy, as well as Switzerland.

The list of reasons to go touring in France is endless! The country is blessed with timeless landscapes, stunning mountains as well as historic towns and traditional villages. It also has a fascinating history and, above all, welcoming people. And it doesn’t stop there. Some of the best wines the world has ever tasted belong to France. Finally, it is simply not possible to visit and not be overwhelmed by its delicious gourmet cuisine.

France is also well known for its quaint pavement cafes, bars, as well as Michelin starred restaurants. And the good news is, you won’t gain any extra pounds as touring calories don’t count anyway!

The French Alps self-guided motorcycle-tour has a certain note of adventure as you’ll base yourselves in Chamonix – the capital of extreme sports. The town is surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenery, and the easiest way to explore it is to take a ride. You don’t have to be a hardcore biker, though. There are many different options for day rides. It ranges from challenging narrow passes with tight hairpins to relaxing wide mountain roads and anything in between.

From here, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to ride some of the most stunning local mountain passes. Over four days, you’ll be exploring the French as well as venturing into the Swiss and Italian Alps. Some of the best-known mountain passes are Col du Grand St-Bernard, Col du Petit St Bernard and Cormet de Roselend. But there are also Col des Saisies as well as Col des Aravis, and Col de la Colombiere. They might not be the A-listers amongst the biking fraternity, but they all regularly feature on the Tour de France. So if they are good enough for cyclists, they are good enough for us too.

The brave ones may decide to take the cable car up the Aiguille du Midi. It offers breathtaking views of Mont Blanc. Often this also turns out to be one of the absolute tour highlights amongst our clients.

One of the free days on this fantastic self guided motorcycle holiday can be used to visit the delightful lakeside town of Annecy. This is a lovely medieval town in a great location with the snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. It is also often referred to as ’the Venice of the French Alps’.

And finally, what makes France so attractive to us is the friendly and positive attitude of French people towards bikers. If you need to filter the traffic, the French drivers will go out of their way to let you pass. Also, if you happen to be stranded with a broken-down bike or a puncture, you will definitely be helped. In our experience, France is by far the friendliest country towards bikers we have ever toured.

Day by day tour itinerary

Day 1 – Folkestone to Troyes (Approx. 250 miles)

The first day of your French Alps self-guided motorcycle-tour starts with an earlyish Eurotunnel channel crossing to France. By hopping on the motorway to Reims, you’ll save time. This will enable you to ride the rural roads in the afternoon. Your route will take you along a section of the famous Champagne Tourist Route through the chalky hills and vineyards.

Your first overnight stay will be in one of the most beautiful towns in the Champagne region. Troyes is the centre of art, history as well as champagne making tradition. With its narrow cobbled streets and fantastic restaurant scene, it is also a great first day of your holiday.

There’s plenty to see in the central area of Troyes. During the middle ages, the town was vital to the great trade routes between Italy and Flanders. The most visited tourist attraction is the Cathedral of St-Pierre-et-St Paul.

So try to check in to your comfortable hotel early and hit the town. It’s worth it.

"The cake shops of Troyes are renowned for their delicious pastries, cakes and bread"
