Let's go touring…

Swiss and Austrian Alps self guided motorcycle holiday

On this Swiss and Austrian-Alps self-guided-motorcycle-tour no one ever asked - are we there yet?

Our Swiss and Austrian-Alps self-guided-motorcycle-tour is tailor-made for those who like to ride in the mountains. It’s also perfect for exploring the diversity of two beautiful Alpine countries.

This fantastic holiday is like when we try to choose between two delicious milk chocolate bars wrapped in beautiful mountain motives. So to shorten the agony, of course… we pick them both. And then, as the wrapping is slowly peeled off, each bite of the journey gets sweeter and sweeter.

To the naked eye, the Swiss Alps and Austrian Tyrol might look very similar or even identical. And, at first glance, they may appear such, but despite being similar in ‘nature’, they are very different in character.

Snow-capped mountains, glamorous ski resorts, cog railways and glorious mountain passes are the literal heart of the Heidiland. You’ll share your stay in the Swiss Alps between two well-known mountain resorts.

In Interlaken, there’s a wide variety of things to do with plenty to see. And there are also many great roads to ride. You can start by stepping back in time. Visit the magnificent Oberhofen Castle as well as its elegant English Gardens. Extend your day and join one of many relaxing lake cruises and visit the charming fishing villages and towns.

Only a short bike ride or train journey will take you to Lauterbrunnen. Here you can see the spectacular Trümmelbach waterfalls. Furthermore, take a long cable car ride to Schilthorn. This magnificent structure is featured in the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret”. It overlooks the entire valley and offers stunning views of the three highest peaks; Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It is also a great place to have lunch at the famous Piz Gloria 360° revolving restaurant.

With Interlaken behind, your travel continues towards Sankt Moritz. This is an area of green meadows and jagged peaks that surround the stunning Engadin Valley. This part of the holiday is marked with rides over some of the most iconic passes in the Swiss Alps. Furka, Grimsel, Maloja and Flüela as well as Ofen, Abula, and Bernina, just to name a few. But the list goes on, including Umbrail, Julier, as well as the godfather of mountain passes – Stelvio.

As you cross into Austria, the sentiments will change from dramatic, exhilarating and challenging to more traditional, homely and relaxing. The Tyroleans are proud of their traditional cuisine and welcoming hospitality, as well as their rich mountain culture. And it is all well reflected in the exceptional customer service throughout this tour.

The hotel’s gourmet restaurant serves delicious Tyrolean dishes passionately prepared by the in-house master chef. Often the hardest part of motorcycle touring in Austria is tearing yourself away from the dining tables.

Besides the splendid views over the mountains, your chalet-style hotel is also a perfect base to explore the area. As it’s only an hour away, a visit to Innsbruck is always a popular option among our clients. Point your bike in the opposite direction, ride towards Italy, and you’ll get to Glorenza. This is a charming fortified Renaissance town with a cobbled square and a relaxing atmosphere. Here you can have the best ice cream ever.

During the next two days, there’ll also be ample time to ride some great biking roads as well as passes. These include Hahntennjoch, Arlberg and Silvretta, as well as Reschen pass and Bregenzerwaldstraße.

This fantastic self guided motorcycle holiday offers much more than what meets the eye. Many clients said some of the highlights weren’t what they read about this tour, but in fact, what they didn’t.

Hannibal once said while crossing the Alps, “If we can’t find our way… we’ll make our own way”. And that is precisely what you can do during this fantastic Swiss and Austrian-Alps self-guided-motorcycle-tour. With such a vast choice of great biking routes, you can follow our suggested itinerary or make your own way.

Switzerland and Austria motorbike trip
Day 1 – Folkestone to Champagne Region (France) (Approx. 250 miles)

Your Swiss and Austrian-Alps self-guided-motorcycle-tour / self guided motorcycle holiday starts as you cross to France via the channel tunnel. A morning departure will allow you to spend less time on motorways and more on country roads.

Your suggested route passes through the Montagne de Reims Nature Park. It is a wooded range of hills covered by vineyards that produce the region’s famous Champagne. Most of the afternoon, you’ll be riding the traffic-free country roads via cultivated farmland and green pastures. On your way, you’ll be passing through sleepy villages and provincial towns.

Sézanne, with its cobbled streets, period houses and the Gothic church, provides a perfect setting for lunch. The café in the town centre usually does the job. At some point, it would also be a good idea to top up with fuel so you are ready for the next morning.

Your first hotel is located between the lakes surrounded by thick forest. You’ll be welcomed with a comfortable room and a gourmet evening meal.
